Annual General Meeting - 11th. July 2003 - Radisson SAS Baypoint : St. Julian's)
The Environment and The Economy – A Forum
Is-Socjeta Turistika Maltija is holding its second Annual General Meeting in July and has chosen , as the theme for discussion, the environment and the economy. The focus will centre around the conflicting issues which arise over the moral and state responsibilities for sustainability and the rather much criticized economic benefits from development and tourism. How much governance is there in tourism related business? Are locals really being pushed out of their own land? How much more development can we really take in Malta and Gozo? These are just some of the questions which we hope to ask during the discussion to be held after the AGM on the 4th. July 2003 from 05.30 pm at the Radisson SAS Baypoint Hotel. The keynote speaker will be Winston Zahra jnr, Managing Director of the The Baypoint which is also an ideal setting since the hotel was originally built with the care of the environment in mind. If you feel a sense of eco awareness, then you should be present at this discussion. The proceedings will be recorded and a report prepared.
The Society also invites associations and organizations such as heritage groups; local councils or individuals to support its mission and create an awareness about the potential tourism has in Malta and Gozo. The Society is also working on forming an affiliation agreement with the Tourism Society in the UK to offer its members more benefits. The Group also plans to create a resource centre which will act as a point of reference for students, academics , entrepreneurs and authorities who need to study tourism impacts or general awareness about the industry. Anyone interested in joining the Society is asked to contact the General Secretary on 9944 0034 or through e-mail on : maltatoursoc@hotmail.com.
